WORK EXPERIENCE
· Liaison/Simultaneous Interpreter—English, French, Spanish into English, French and Spanish—at the “World Fishing Exhibition” held in Vigo, Spain in September 1997.
Interpreting in this case required careful research and study of specialised terminology related to both the shipping and fishing industries.
· Technical translator at LCI, Paris, France, October-November 1997.
I worked as an in-house translator, translating French and English telecommunications manuals into Spanish. I had to familiarise myself with all telecom-related terminology for the three different languages and adapt it to the specific requirements of the Spanish market. I would use terminology databases provided by the client company and add the necessary new terms when a translation did not exist in the target language, thus doing the necessary research in order to find the most appropriate terms. I would also proffered and edit existing translations. I constantly had to meet tight deadlines, which meant having to produce a very high volume of text in very short periods of time.
· Software Localisation Engineer at Microsoft Worldwide Products Ireland, 5th January 1998 up to 10th October 1998.
My main tasks as an SLE were localising/translating software products into Spanish and fixing both cosmetic and functional bugs in the actual programmes. I worked with a set of internal tools that allowed me both to localise the software and to manage the terminology that was used for the actual localisation so that all terms could be tracked for consistency and accuracy across different platforms and products. I also used HTML editing tools to localise and resize all the HTML content for my project. I generated and handed off files to building engineers who created a build that I installed and tested. I used a software bug tracking database and made sure any problems having to do with my product build were solved before a new build was made. I had to maintain constant contact with localisers for other languages and projects, language specialists, builders and testers in order to ensure my product met the necessary quality requirements both at a linguistic and functional level. Tight deadlines had to be met so that my other team members could complete their work in time for the product to be released in accordance with the pre-set schedule. The projects I worked on as the sole localiser for Spanish were: Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.
· Spanish Language Specialist at Corel Corporation, Dublin, 19th October 1998 up to October 1999.
As the Language Specialist for Spanish, I was responsible for the linguistic quality of all Corel software, both Graphics and Business Applications. I performed linguistic reviews on all components of the software and either provided the translators with feedback using a Language Quality Report or implemented the required changes directly into the files myself.
